South Coogee Students Commemorate ANZAC Day

During the holidays a group of South Coogee students remembered the soldiers of wars past and present by attending the ANZAC Service held at Coogee-Randwick RSL during the holidays the week prior to ANZAC Day. Unfortunately, the wet weather meant that once again the march was cancelled. However, the students represented our school wonderfully through their presence at this most important event. Our school Prime Minister, Cambell J. wore his Great Grandfather, Harry Johnston’s medals, which were for service in the 2nd World War. Gemma T.‘s father Peter, (pictured at left) was present and helped in the laying of a wreath. Also pictured are: Gemma T, the Duncan family, Riley, Ryan and Tallis, Nathin G and Cambell J. Thank you to all the parents and friends who attended this service during the holiday break.

During the last week of school in Term 1, we recognised ANZAC Day with two wonderful assemblies. Each class made a wreath and discussed the importance and meaning behind the ANZAC legend. The wreaths were later delivered to Coogee-Randwick RSL and displayed at the club’s memorial during the week leading up to ANZAC Day. Students in Kinder and Stage 1 held an assembly outdoors and made poppies to display and spell the words ‘Lest We Forget’ in the playground area. Stages 2 and 3 students held their assembly in the hall where many senior students whose families are part of our defence forces spoke of their pride and the impact of having a parent who is serving Australia at present. Along with our student leaders, who had written poems or completed research, they expressed the values that the ANZAC tradition has brought to all Australians.

A special part of our assembly this year was watching the many photos that had been brought in by students of relatives who have served, or are serving Australia since the ANZAC legend began. These were presented in a PowerPoint display during the assembly.

We appreciated the presence of the many family and friends who were able to attend our assemblies.

Finally, a special thanks to our two staff members, Mrs Angie Sutton and Mrs Lyndall Luscombe who organised each wonderful assembly this year.
