Sport

South Coogee PS offers a varied physical education and sport program. Our students  benefit from having a specialist teacher to plan and implement the Physical Education program in Years 2-6. This program provided students with opportunities to develop their individual skill level and participate in various sports. Kindergarten and Stage 1 students were involved in lessons developing gross motor skills and learning rules necessary to take part in modified games. Non-swimmers in Years 2-4 accessed the Department’s Learn to Swim Program in Term 4.

Summer sport for students in Stages 2 and 3 include PSSA (Primary Schools Sports Association) competition sport of softball for girls, AFL and cricket. In winter students are selected to participate in soccer, rugby league and netball.

In 2008 Two hundred and twenty-seven students competed in the Eastern Suburbs Primary Schools Sport Association (ESPSSA) competitions in six sports and extra teams were entered in the soccer and netball competitions. Last  year South Coogee won the Junior Soccer, Senior Netball, the Senior Cricket competition and were the overall point score winners in Rugby League.

Thirty-one students were selected into Eastern Suburbs Zone teams in a range of sports including touch football, cricket, tennis, AFL, basketball, soccer, rugby league, netball and Rugby Union. A further twenty-two students were selected to play in Sydney East Regional Teams in rugby league, soccer, AFL, Rugby Union, cricket, tennis, basketball and touch football.

Students not competing at PSSA level were involved in a school based sport program and selected from a range of activities including dance, gymnastics, tennis, soccer, basketball, oz-tag and a multi-skills activity program.

South Coogee won two Eastern Suburbs PSSA Zone Carnivals this year in Swimming and Cross Country and came second in Athletics, thereby allowing a large contingent of students to represent the zone at the Sydney East Regional Carnivals. Of the forty students who attended the ESPSSA Zone Swimming carnival, 20 students went on to represent the Zone at Sydney East Regional Carnival in individual swimming events as well as three relay teams. Two students were selected to compete at the NSWPSSA Carnival. A team of 48 students represented our school at the Eastern Suburbs Zone Cross Country Carnival to become the winning school overall. Fifteen students competed at the Regional Carnival with 3 being selected to compete at the NSWPSSA Cross Country Carnival. In Athletics 46 students represented the school at the Zone Carnival with 13 students being selected to compete in individual events at Regional level. Three students represented the region at State level in Athletics with one student winning a gold medal in High Jump.

The annual Maroubra Fun Run is a community event held in October. Forty-one students had a wonderful time competing in the 4km primary schools team event.
