HUMAN SOCIETY AND ITS ENVIRONMENT (HSIE)

Human Society and Its Environment is the key learning area in which students develop knowledge, understandings, skills, values and attitudes about people and their environments.

There are four strands in the syllabus:-

· Change and Continuity

· Cultures

· Environments

· Social Systems and Structures

At South Coogee Public School these strands are covered in the sequential program devised for each stage. Students will learn about Australia's history and geography; the people who live in Australia and their social, cultural, political and economic lives; neighbouring countries and other cultures.

Excursions are regularly organised to complement a unit of work being studied. Speakers or cultural groups are often invited to the school to help extend the children's understanding of a HSIE topic.

Throughout the program there is an emphasis on the development of research skills, involving responses to information acquired.
