MATHEMATICS

Mathematics allows students to learn concepts in Number, Patterns and Algebra, Data, Measurement and Space and Geometry. These content areas provide the basics in knowledge, skills and understanding to develop students’ thinking, competence and confidence in the applications of mathematics. The Working Mathematically strand builds on a problem-solving approach.

Children are taught in ways appropriate to their individual stage of development. A variety of materials and programs are used to ensure the needs of all children are met. Support is provided for children with special needs and children who demonstrate particular ability in mathematics are place in numeracy clusters in their stage group.

Kindergarten to Year 2 class mathematics programs are consolidated through participation in the Count Me in Too numeracy program with its emphasis on hands-on learning activities. Students are also encouraged to reflect on their mental processes in organised group activities.
