Our Schools History

South Coogee Public School has been a place of learning for over 60 years and has undergone numerous metamorphoses. The original 1945 building bordering Tucabia Street became the Infants Department when the school was enlarged and has more recently become the South Coogee learning Centre (SCLS). The Learning Centre houses Day Care programs, Before- School Care, After School Care and Vacation Care programs. The school hall was constructed in the sixties through joint Department of Education and P and C funding. The Kindergarten to Year 2 classrooms were built soon after to accommodate the high influx of students housed on short term basis at the Endeavour Migrant Hostel overlooking Latham Park and the Bundock Street Navy Stores. With the demise of the Hostel in the late seventies, the school enrolments declined until the 1990's when families returned to the area. this and the dezoning of school so that parents can choose a school outside their local area, has resulted in our school returning to its place as a leading learning institution in the Eastern Suburbs with over 500 student enrolments.
