South Coogee Scholarship Funds

The 2007 scholarship winner, Ronald Fung with Greg Short
The School Scholarship Funds are annual programs of defined funds accrual and award distribution. The first fund was established in 1999, with the corresponding first award given at the end of 2005. Each annual Fund then, has a six year life span.
The purpose of the funds is to recognise ongoing scholarship for South Coogee students in the six years following primary school.
Basically, each year the Year 6 students raise $1000 and, rather than donate this money to the school as a traditional present, the amount is banked by the school in trust for 6 years. At the end of the sixth year, one student from that particular year is awarded this saved amount for his/her ongoing studies. The student may have just completed Year 12 at school, or may have left schooling altogether, or may be attending TAFE.
The Scholarship Fund is an excellent vehicle for advancement of the values of the school. Students are helping to plan for their own future and in the process, are better understanding the concept of self sacrifice and reward. The onus is on the students to keep in touch with South Coogee Public School over the six years and let us know how they are going.
The school does not gain financially from the Scholarship Fund. It has been money raised by the students, for the students.
Three student leaders, with the student parliament coordinator and the Principal, judge the Year 6 cohort six years earlier, for evidence of ongoing commitment to learning (as shown in any evidence supplied to the school over the six years) and decide upon who will be the recipient of that year’s Scholarship Fund.
Once the decision has been made, the fund recipient is approached to give the returning student address to students at the end of year Stages 2 and 3 Presentation Day and to receive his or her award from the Year 6 student leaders.
In 2005 the first Scholarship Fund (1999) was awarded to Brent Armitage.
In 2006 the second Scholarship Fund (2000) was awarded to Shi Shi Luo.
In 2007 the Scholarship Fund (2001) was awarded to Ronald Fung.
In 2008 the Scholarship Fund (2002) was awarded to Leigh Hobday.
