In Terms 1 and 2 Miss Stevenson, Mrs Duthie and Miss Moloney will be running Chess Club for Stages 2 and 3 within the school. For the remainder of this term we are hoping to get some of our more experienced players to help teach those children who want to learn how to play, before we start our more serious competition in Week 3 of next term. Chess club will be held on a Monday at lunch time 1:30pm – 2:00pm in S3M’s room. If you are interested please come to the S3M (Miss Moloney’s) classroom after eating time next Monday 1st March.
Premier's Reading Challenge
The Premier's Reading Challenge for 2010 is underway. Children have received their reading logs and can now start recording the books they have read towards the challenge. Details can't be entered on-line until March, which is not too far away. Students in Kindergarten to Year Two need to read 30 books, while children in Years Three to Six need to read 20 books. Children in Kindergarten to Year Two can have books read to them. If you have any questions about the Premier's Reading Challenge, please don't hesitate to come and see Mr Philpott in the Library.

Last Thursday, three of our Year 6 parliamentarians attended the ‘Opening of the School Year for Sydney Region’ with Mr Fielding. Below is a report from Emma C (S3N).
Last week I had the opportunity, along with Lauren E (S3TS) and Luke J (S3TS), to attend the Sydney Region ‘Opening of the School Year’ at the City Recital Hall. The show was great. It was full of music and dancing by students who attend public schools in the Sydney Region. After the show, we all enjoyed lunch with Mr Fielding and Mrs Matuska.

Student Safety Before and After School
We would like to remind parents of the importance of maintaining a safe environment for our students before and after school and would greatly appreciate the support of all in achieving this. Students are supervised on the playground from 8.30am. After this time all students K - 2 are to play in the Infants Quad outside the kinder rooms. Students in Years 3 6 are to play in the Undercover Playground. No students should be using the equipment or playing in any other area. To help the teachers who are on duty in the morning and to ensure the safety of all, we ask parents not to take any students to other areas of the school (such as the equipment on the Top Playground) to play.
At the end of the day all parents and students should have left the school grounds by 3.10pm. A bell is rung at this time as a reminder. Gates on Tucabia St are locked after 3.10pm and, again, to maintain the safety of all students, we ask that parents vacate the school grounds and not remain behind to allow students to play on site. Thankyou for your support and understanding of this very important student safety issue.

Primary Swimming Carnival
Last Monday the whole of the Primary school, as well as some 8yr olds from Yr2, attended the Swimming Carnival at the Des Renford Aquatic Centre. What a fantastic day! Everyone competed at their own level gaining vital points for their respective houses. Thank you to all the children for such a great effort, not just in the pool but also in the stands. A few more thankyous are needed - as usual we can't run such a successful Carnival without the support of our Parent body. There were those of you who came along to support your children and others who also performed jobs. Everyone worked tirelessly throughout the day and well after the carnival. Thanks also to Maroubra Swimming Club who supplied all the equipment.
There will be an assembly next Friday 12th February, where place getters will be presented with their ribbons and the Zone Team will be announced. The children will be informed as to the starting time closer to the day.
There is also some lost property at the front office, a pair of size 7 Assic runners with white and pink socks in them, a kick board that has ‘Sam was here’ etched into it and a pair of flippers with the name Coen written on them.
Thanks again to all the children, parents and staff for such a great day.
